The Arnolfini Portrait by Jan van Eyck uses what medium of paint to achieve the desired realistic effect?
Oil-based paint is used in the portrait, though not the inventor of oil-based paint he is often cited as being one of the first to use it. You can tell a painting uses oil-based paint if while looking at the painting you can tell its layered, whereas acrylic paint is usually applied smooth. another clue is that oil paint is usaul very glossy and shiny while acrylic dries matte.
