What is mise-en-scène in film, and how can it impact an audience's viewing experience?
Mise-en-scène is everything appears within the frame. That includes the set dressing, the props, the costumes, the actors, and the lighting. The mise-en-scène can have a huge effect on audience's experiences. For example, low-key lighting will have a moody effect and possibly hide elements of the frame. Highly stylized props will give the effect of elevated realism. We can dive into more specific examples of devices, how they function, and their effects in specific films.
What is the significance of the mockingbird in To Kill a Mockingbird?
Atticus Finch tells his children "it's a sin to kill a mockingbird" because the mockingbird is an animal that does no harm. The mockingbird is a songbird and it only brings music to the world, so to kill it would be to inflict pointless cruelty on a harmless creature. Several characters in the novel are very similar to the mockingbird, like Tom Robinson and Boo Radley, in that they are treated poorly without good reason.
