Why are vaccines important?
Vaccines provide immunity against certain diseases usually by taking an inactivated virus or protein from an infectious virus or bacteria and activating the body's immune system against it. There are certain individuals who have a weakened immune system either due to medical problems or they are too young so that they cannot receive vaccinations. It is important for healthy people to receive vaccines in order to protect them. This is referred to as "herd immunity". Can you think of how herd immunity would protect unvaccinated individuals?
