Niraj J.

Answer:

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally: PEMDAS: Parentheses Exponents Multiply Divide Add Subtract. These are the order of operations. (4+2) is first equalling 6. Making the equation 4*6-1*5. Multipling is next 4*6 = 24 and 1*5 = 5. Making 24 - 5 = 19. Answer is 19

Question:

There is a classroom with 10 girls and 10 boys. If 2 girls left class and 4 boys were added. How many total people are left in the class?

Niraj J.

Answer:

Word problems can be tricky. The key to solving them is to take the problem sentence by sentence. In the beginning there are 10 girls and 10 boys making the total students 20 (10+10). Looking ahead we see we need the TOTAL amount so we will stick with doing calculations with the total. Now if 2 girls left that means you subtract 2 from the TOTAL 20 - 2 = 18 TOTAL students. After this you add 4 boys which means 18 + 4 which makes it 22 TOTAL students. Answer: 22

Question:

Write an expression for 5 less the product of 4 and x.

Niraj J.

Answer:

We would start out by understanding what the terms: "less" and "product" mean. "Less" means minus sign (-) and "product" means multiply (*). So, "product of 4" and x is (4*x). We move on to "5 less". This can be SOMETHING - 5 or 5 - SOMETHING. From the sentence is seems as though the answer should be 5 - 4x. This is incorrect because the term "less" means take SOMETHING and subtract 5 from it. Answer is: 4x - 5.
