What can I do to become a better writer?
This question can be answered with a single word: read, The more we read, the more we interact with the world that shapes our words. By reading everything you can get your hands on (literature, magazines, menus, brochures, etc), you are exposing yourself to words in different forms, put together for their own purposes. This in turn will filter into your own writing, allowing you to better communicate thoughts, no matter what form of writing - creative non-fiction, creative non-fiction, business, etc.
What is the purpose of studying literature, especially literature from distant times or far away places?
Literature is a reflection of the time and place from which it was written. To study it is to examine not only examine its specific attributes (language, symbolism, irony, etc), but to make a critical examination of the world in its time.
Why are writing specifics such as grammar, mechanics, and word placement so important?
Communication is the essential foundation of human interaction. Without it, we could not find our way in a rapidly-changing society, let alone advance socially or financially. When done correctly by employing correct technique and attention to detail, we reveal ourselves as intelligent, competent individuals worthy of respect and opportunities. When done incorrectly, we reveal only our own ignorance, and push ourselves to the back of the many lines which populate our world.
