How do I get started writing an essay or paper?

Just start! Suspend your judgment of the words, and simply just start. You cannot be creator and editor at the same time. Once it is on the page, it is easy to edit.

What is the number one thing that enables success in study of any subject?

Mindset. I do not believe in natural talent! I believe that everybody has the ability to learn and develop any skills they desire. Sure, some people might have a bit of a head start due to nature (call this talent if you wish.) But, this "endowment" can only take a person so far. Over time, the person who has developed problem solving skills and works hard will surpass the "gifted" student who does not. I have much experience in developing an individualized process to help anyone succeed at learning to master a subject.

How is music theory relevant to performance?

Many student musicians will ask "why do I need to know how to read music?" After all, there are many legendary musicians in history that could barely read music, yet still achieved high acclaim for their performances. I believe that understanding music theory heightens one's sensitivity and options during a performance. If a performer understands how music works- where each phrase is headed, where the climax is, etc, then they can make educated decisions about their interpretations. Furthermore, they are enabled to make unique decisions about their interpretations. That is to say, perhaps they will discover something new about a piece of music that has been performed for hundreds of years.
