### Subject:Basic Math

Question:

Given an equation of a straight line, Y=mX+c, how do I find the slope of the straight line and the y-intercept?

Inactive
Priscilla L.

The slope of the line is the value of m in the equation Y=mX+c while the y-intercept is the value of the constant C. The y-intercept is the value of Y when X=0.

Question:

Why might economic growth in a country increase the demand for electricity?

Inactive
Priscilla L.

Economic growth would suggest that a country's capacity to produce has increased. Increased production of goods would mean that there are more machines working, therefore, more electricity is required to power the machines. Increased production of services may also require more electricity as it would mean that more people are working and perhaps for longer hours. Electricity is needed to power the computers that people work on and the lights in the offices that they work in.

Question:

Are mutually exclusive events the same as independent events?

Inactive
Priscilla L.

No, they are not the same. Mutually exclusive events are two events that are not related to one another at all. For example, in a box with a white ball and a red ball, the event that a white ball is drawn (event 1) and the event that a red ball is drawn (event 2) are not related and hence mutually exclusive. The term independent events can be used to describe a two events where the outcome of one event will not affect the outcome of another. For example, in a box with a white ball and a red ball, the event that a white ball is drawn (then returned) will not affect the probability of a red ball being drawn the next time a ball is drawn.
