Question:

Describe the difference between the Renaissance and Northern Renaissance.

Answer:

For one, the Northern Renaissance occurred in Northern Europe, in countries such as the Netherlands and Germany. The Renaissance occurred in Italy and was influenced by Classical Greek sculpture, the anatomical form and details, and religion and mythology. The Renaissance was seen as a rebirth of Classical art and ideals and made use of deep perspective. The Northern Renaissance focused on the individual, emphasizing portraits, a structured landscape in which to present them in, and humanism.

Question:

Explain stratigraphy? What is it and how can it be used to relatively date an artifact? What are some other uses of stratigraphy?

Answer:

Stratigraphy is the layering of soil as time passes by and can be seen along the walls of a shovel test. The layers are different colors and an artifact found can be dated by looking at which layer of soil it was found in. The lower the layer, the older the artifact is. It is assumed that younger artifacts would be found closer to the top layer because the artifact would have been buried more recently. Stratigraphy can also tell us the type of soil that was deposited. This is important because different soil types can tell us the level of preservation adn the possible type of environment that existed at the time of deposition.
