About Gavin

About Gavin
Computer programmer. Avid tutor. Enjoy talking about the things I'm good at (and got to go to school for). I spent several years as a tutor and most enjoyed the aspect of talking about topics which are a mutual interest for everyone involved, which is most times the topic they're there to get a little help with in the first place.

Teaching Experience

Teaching Experience
I spent several years employed as a computer science tutor for university students at the University of California Santa Cruz. My classes included advanced programming, assembly programming, and algorithm analysis with sizes from individual students to 15-20 students. I currently work as an embedded programmer working on a IoT smart home platform for enterprise hospitals.

Work Experience

Work Experience
Jefferson Hospitals, Embedded Programmer
2019 - 2019
I am part of the IoT team developing software for embedded devices. We are working on an initiative to improve patient care in clinical environments. Our team leads the technical development for patient SmartRooms, an effort to make hospital stays more enjoyable for patients and easier for caregivers through the use of an intelligent room assistant.
University of California, Santa Cruz, Academic Tutor
2018 - 2018
I was a Computer Science and Engineering tutor under the Learning Services department at UCSC. I had the responsibility and freedom of choose the curriculum to present and ensure it was in step with what was being taught in class. Students would submit comments and reviews every quarter, and feedback meetings as well as teaching sit-ins by my supervisors helped me improve as a tutor and overall communicator. I taught several classes ranging from Assembly language and Computer Architecture, to Java and C Programming and Data Structures.
Self Employed, SAT/ACT tutor
2017 - 2018
I opened a small SAT/ACT prep class for high school students at my local community college. Every week I would help students run through problems on the exams and learn methods of approaching problems and taking the test with confidence. Classes were 10 weeks long with approximately 15 students in all stages of high school.
