Question:

Simplify Descartes' meditation on first philosophy and refute it.

Colin S.
Answer:

1. I am certain that I exist. 2. I cannot be certain that my body exists. 3. I know that I am a thing that thinks. 4. I can understand, imagine and doubt. 5. I have sensory perception. 6. So, I am just a mind. A problem comes up in Descartes’s Second mediation when he comes to his conclusion and states that he is just a mind. If he is just a mind it seems that if someone was able to take his mind and put it in the body of a bear he would remain the same. Since his body might not exist he is just a ghost in the machine. His body doesn't add anything to who he is since he is just a mind. This seems to be a major flaw in Descartes argument because if a mind was placed in inanimate or even another living animals body it would be crazy to assume that it is still the exact same thinking thing. This directly opposes Descartes saying he is just a mind because it seems like there are other factors when it comes to thought and existing than just being a mind.
