Question:

How do I simplify an improper fraction?

Inactive
Nuha I.

Start by turning the fraction to a mixed number by dividing the numerator (number on top of the fraction) by the denominator (number below the fraction). Take the remainder of the division and place it on top of the denominator of the original fraction. The answer gained from the division at the beginning is combined with this new fraction. for example: The fraction is 13 ÷ 4 (13/4) Step 1: Divide 13 by 4. 13 ÷ 4 = 3 R1 ( 4 x 3 = 12; R: 13 - 12 = 1) Step 2: Take the remainder and place it over the denominator of the old fraction. R = 1, Old denominator: 4 New fraction: 1 ÷ 4 (1/4) Step 3: Combine the whole number in the answer and the new fraction to make a mixed fraction. 3 1/4 Final answer: 3 1/4
