Why is it important to keep our audience in my mind when we are writing?
Writing is a reaction to someone or something. When we write we have a goal that we need to achieve through our audience. Maybe we've been given an academic assignment, or we just got a text about what we're doing after school - regardless, we now must react to our want or need to connect with and communicate to our audience. We know who our audience is and why they need to read our writing. Now, we need to think about our response, plan how to respond and what we want to write. The awareness of our audience helps us make choices about how and what to write.
Subject: Film and Theater
What essential elements do Theater and Film share?
Theater and Film both reassure us that we are part of a larger world. Through the use of a variety of storytelling techniques, Theater and Film create shared experiences that connect audiences to the rest of the world. We discover we are not alone and that we all share common dreams and fears. As we sit in the audience, we identify with the characters and the situations and we learn more about ourselves in the process.
Fear of public speaking is a common form of anxiety. How can you overcome the fear of public speaking?
As a public speaking instructor in college and high school, I have seen the amazing results of taking a class in public speaking. Students who entered the class filled with worry and anxiety were able to overcome their concerns and create highly effective presentations which they delivered with confidence. Beginning with solid, in depth topic knowledge, followed by careful planning and incremental practice students began to see themselves as successful and able to focus on their material not the audience.
