Question:

What does it mean for a text to begin 'In Media Res'?

Inactive
Simone H.
Answer:

'In Media Res' is a literary technique that translates roughly to 'in the middle of'. A text that begins In Media Res, therefore, begins in the middle of the action, rather than following a linear path from beginning to end. This has the effect of gaining the interest and investment of the reader, piquing their curiosity and leaving them invested in how the character/s got to that point. It is mainly epic poems such as The Odyssey that employ this technique although it has been used in mainstream, modern texts also.

Answer:

The structure of a text can be used to construct new meaning within a story or informative piece. It is used with the intent to craft the reader's perception of the text, through the manipulation and arrangement of events.
