Subject: Study Skills

Question:

What's the best way to recall information that I have studied?

Answer:

I have studied how the brain retains and recalls information throughout my educational career. I find it fascinating! I have found 2 methods of studying which seem to result in the greatest amount of recall. The first is to study in the same frame of mind that you need to recall the information - i.e. when you are taking a test. You will most likely be most interested in feeling well rested and refreshed when taking the test, so you should try to study in the same frame of mind. The second method is to practice spaced repetition. Expose yourself to the information repeatedly, but spaced over time. Try repeat exposures every couple of days, or so.

Question:

Why are scales important?

Answer:

Scales define the composition. They are the alphabet to any piece of music. The melodic intervals between pitches conform to the scale. The harmonic pitches are drawn from the scale. The scale determines the sonority of the piece of music. Scales provide shortcuts for key signatures when composing or reading music. Scales also provide structure and shortcuts when improvising, as in jazz.

Answer:

All art enhances our lives, allows us to express our feelings, communicate a message, and exercise creativity. We can make art, or appreciate art, and get the same boost in our lives. Music is different than other art forms. Music connects our soul to our physical body. Music has mood and energy. The mood and energy of music speak to our soul, and also affects our physical selves. Hormone levels can be changed through music, for example. Music improves our lives in many ways.
