Subject: Writing

Question:

How should I begin writing a paper?

Inactive
Caleb B.
Answer:

Depending on the time constraint and your own personality, beginning a paper can be done in two ways: (1) composing an outline and then free writing a rough draft according to the outline or (2) Deriving an outline from free writing a rough draft. The first is for people who have a clear structure in mind, and can use it as a prompt for ideas. The second is for people who have lots of ideas, but lack structure. Also remember writing and editing are separate phases.

Question:

What is the antinomy of taste?

Answer:

The antinomy of taste is a seeming paradox in aesthetics, popularized specifically by Kant, but of importance generally in the 18th century. It arises from the common contradictory beliefs that (1) artistic taste is subjective and (2) that we can rationally defend the merits of specific works. For instance, we might acknowledge that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", but also regard Shakespeare as clearly a better writer than Stephenie Meyer (which we could support with good reasons).

Question:

What characteristics of Baroque art can be seen in Artemisia Gentileschi's painting, "Judith Beheading Holofernes".

Answer:

Gentileschi's painting incorporates tenebrism and contemporary clothing, which are characteristically baroque because they express the influence and popularity of Caravaggio at the time. The heightened drama and emphasis on a specific moment are more general qualities of the Baroque period.
