How can I find the length of a tree's shadow?

In most word problems trees stand up right creating a 90-degree angle, which will allow us to look at this like a right-triangle trig problem. There are a couple of ways to solve this depending on the information given. If we are given the height of the tree and the distance from the top of the tree to the end of the shadow (the hypotenuse) we can use Pythagorean theorem to find the third missing side. If we know the angle of elevation from the end of the shadow to the top of the tree and either the height of the tree or the hypotenuse mentioned earlier, we can use cosine or tangent to help us find the missing side.

How much will it cost to fill up a sand box with sand?

If we know the measurements of the sandbox we can determine the volume. In most cases, sand can be bought by 1-3 cubic feet at a certain price. By finding the volume of the sandbox, which will be in cubic feet, we can determine how many bags of sand will be needed to fill up the box, thus allowing us to determine the cost to fill up the sand box.

How is a linear function useful in real life?

Linear functions can be used to predict profit, income over time and more. We can also use them to compare the cost of services such as cellphone company and their rates to help us determine which company and plan is the best for us.
