Question:

Explain the concept of the word "aircraft".

Answer:

The students are intermediate level and may be familiar with the synonyms/antonyms of the words. The first word is “aircraft carrier”. I would show a picture of an carrier and ask, “Do you know what this is?” Most likely the students will say “boat”. I would say that it is a boat with a specific or special purpose. The picture would have planes on the ship, to which I would ask, “What is the cargo—or what is the ship carrying?” They would say “planes”. I would ask them for synonyms of the word plane, and guide them to the word “aircraft”.

Question:

In the short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Dr. Heidegger's Experiment, why does the doctor value youth so much that he creates the experiment in the first place?

Answer:

Since the death of his wife, Dr. Heidegger realizes how young people waste the years they have on frivolous pursuits and foolish behavior. His experiment proves that even when given a second chance at youth, the participants in his experiment waste time on insipid and vacuous pursuits--such as the gentlemen fawning and fighting over the one lady in their group.
