Answer:

Line up our proportion table -- cross divide. 6 * x = 6x 9 * 8 = 72 6x = 72 How do we get x by itself? We need to divide it by 6; what we do to one side, we do to the other. Leaves us with: x = 12

Answer:

What is the definition of "product"? "Product" is the answer we get when we multiple numbers. First we need to find the product of 2.78 x 2; this equals 5.56. We would round this to 6.

Question:

This year, a salesman sells a total of $60,000 worth of steak knives by going door-to-door. This represents a 20% increase from the year before. What was the value of his sales last year?

Answer:

What do we use when a specific number we need is unknown? Variables -- usually called "x". So we know last year, he sold x. This year, we know he met x and then went over it by 20%. That means he met 100% of the amount and then 20% more, which combined = 120%. That totaled $60,000. In math, "of" often means the same as multiplication. So if we know this year's profit ($60,000) was 120% OF last year's profit, how would we write that? This year's profit = 120% of last year's profit $60,000 = 120% x (of) "x" We can't multiply until we make our percentage a decimal. $60,000 = 1.2x We need x by itself -- so we divide the right side by 1.2 and what we do to one side, we must do to the other. $50,000 = x Therefore, the salesman sold $50,000 worth of steak knives last year.
