Question:

The following sentence has a grammar mistake within it. Identify the mistake and then state how to fix the error. "I worked all day, I deserve to go out and have fun."

Answer:

The sentence has a comma splice, where two independent clauses are joined by only a comma. There are two main ways to fix this: 1) add a coordinating conjunction, such as "and," after the comma, or 2) turn the comma into a semicolon.

Question:

In some of the most famous opening lines of literature, the narrator Nick, in the novel The Great Gatsby, states that his father gave him some advice when he was younger. Paraphrase this advice and explain how it applies to Nick's interactions throughout the novel.

Answer:

In the novel, Nick is told by his father to try and avoid making judgements on other people as not everyone in the world has had the same advantages, particularly financial ones, that Nick has had. In other words, he's been lucky enough in life to be born in a family with some money and not everyone has been that lucky. The advice informs many of Nick's actions throughout the novel, including his time spent with the characters Tom and Daisy Buchanan and Jordan Baker, but it is with the title character, Jay Gatsby, that we really see Nick taking this advice to heart. It is what eventually makes him decide that Tom and Daisy are worthless people who destroy things and lives, while Gatsby was "worth the whole damn bunch put together."

Question:

In the short story, "The Cold Equations," by Tom Godwin, what is the main type of conflict in the story, and what is the main solution to that conflict?

Answer:

In "The Cold Equations," the main conflict is what is often termed as a "person v nature" conflict; in this case, the conflict is that a stowaway named Marilyn finds herself on a ship in space that doesn't have enough fuel to safely land with her onboard. If she remains on board, she will not only force the sip to crash with herself and the pilot, but she will also doom the six ill people for which the emergency ship is bringing medicine. The solution to this conflict arrives when Marilyn voluntarily puts herself into the airlock so she can be jettisoned from the ship. The others may live, but she will die.
