Question:

How can I make my resume look nicer in Microsoft Word?

Answer:

Word has a variety of formatting options you can use to get your resume looking the way you want, from margins and paragraph spacing, to font types and sizes, and more! Some of these options can be found along the ribbon at the top of the screen, where you can find groups of preferences. Say you want to make your name at the top more visible at the top of the page, so let’s go ahead and make it bold. That means we’re working with the font style, which can include italics, underlining, and yes, bolding. First thing’s first, you’ll want to select the text you want to change, by highlighting it. You can do this by clicking at the beginning of your name before the text, hold down the Shift key, and tap your arrow buttons to get to the end of your name. Make sure you have the “Home” tab selected at the top of the ribbon, then look for the “Font” group. From there, you just need to click the “B” button and voila! Your text is bold now!

Question:

When is it appropriate to use a semicolon?

Answer:

Semicolons are used to connect similar thoughts and ideas, without starting an entirely new sentence. They provide more solidity than a comma, and a little less of a full stop than a period or other terminating punctuation. You can also use semicolons in lists that have commas already in them, to present your comma-laden items. Sometimes semicolons can even help you create a list within a list! For example: “Before I adopt a cat, I will need to purchase many supplies, especially edible items like treats, catnip, and wet food; fun items like toys, furniture, and bedding; and functional items like a crate and blankets.”

Question:

What are some ways that you can search a library catalog to find materials you are interested in?

Inactive

Answer:

The most inclusive and broadest search would be a keyword search, which will bring up results that have a matching term, whether in the material topic, author, title, or more. You can perform a narrower search if you know exactly what you’re looking for. For example, you might be looking for books with “algebra” in the title. In that case, you would want to limit your search for the term “algebra” just to a title search, and also make sure you’re limiting your results to the “book” or “monograph” format. This will help you get search results that get you closer to the information you need or want.
