The reference interview is perhaps one of the most important pieces in being an information professional. Tell me about this process and why it is so important.
First impressions are a big deal. When conducting a reference interview you have to first acknowledge that a person needs your help first and foremost. So no questions is too big or small for you to take the time to answer. Some times this interaction will make or break how a patron feels about the library. Reference interviews can be simple and straightforward but they can also be a little more time-consuming. A librarian needs to know how to ask questions so that they can provide the information a patron actually needs which sometimes is not what they initially start with. Tell me about your research topic? Make sure to ask questions of your own so that you can better understand and this will also go a long way in making the patron feel comfortable with this interaction.
As a leader it is important to knowing your strengths and weaknesses is important, explain how failure to do self reflection can hinder your leadership and managerial attempts?
Leadership is all about making connections. As a manager, you need to be able to trust the people you supervise. By knowing what your strengths and weaknesses are you will be better equipped to create a collaborative environment. While you may be good at making sales you might need help with marketing. Failure to realize that you need help as a manager can cost you business, Leadership is not about being good at everything it is be being aware and making connections that others might not see.
