Question:

What does a transformer do?

Monomita P.
Answer:

A transformer takes mains voltage (usually) through a piece of wire wrapped around a soft iron core a certain number of times. This induces a voltage in another set of wires wrapped closeby. The change in voltage is according to the number of times wrapped (or wound). e.g. you want 12v from a 24ov supply, one is wound 20 times more than the other. Typically at home you power laptops, charge phones etc. The simple transformer just changes voltage. Your phone charger also converts the alternating current from the mains (AC) to direct current (DC), which is similar to a battery.
