Question:

What are some key aspects of effective essays?

Inactive
Dani S.
Answer:

Though only a piece of what makes writing effective, structure matters! Be sure to organize your essay in an Introduction, Body, Conclusion format. Within this structure, there is plenty of room for creativity. In your introduction, lay out the main ideas you will present in the paper, moving from broad to specific. The body of the essay should contain support for the main ideas, including quotations and research from others who have written and spoken on this topic. The body is where things can get a bit wordy, so keep in mind the adage quality over quantity. Each sentence in your essay should present new information or enhance the sentence before it in some way. Last, draw the essay to an end with a conclusion section. Here, you will restate your main points, offer thoughts on further research or investigation, and/or look ahead to the future of your topic. Poets often strive to say simple and every day things in a way that they have never been said before. Bring that spirit of creativity and originality into all that you write. You have a special and particular lens that you see the world through, so pay attention to what that lens is and try to speak authentically. It will make you a better writer and the person reading will feel you in the essay.

Question:

What are core values that guide those in the library profession?

Answer:

There are many values that a librarian must keep in mind when delivering services to the public. Some of the core principles are intellectual freedom, social responsibility, privacy, and access. First and foremost, everyone has the right to an education and access to materials that will lead to an education. Practical applications of this principle might be willingness to use a homeless shelter address as someone's permanent address in order to grant them a library card. Intellectual freedom is another important value that may take shape in your collection development policies and practices, displays, and programs offered. Privacy is necessary to maintain intellectual freedom as all who use library services have a right to their information and resource use being kept only between librarian and patron. Finally, social responsibility is a necessary aspect of librarianship as we serve the public and want to ensure that all who walk through our doors feel welcome, no matter the social identities they carry.

Question:

Why is defining a mental health crisis always difficult and nuanced?

Inactive
Dani S.
Answer:

Mental health crises are defined by those experiencing them. For some, the loss of a treasured pet will push them into crisis while the loss of housing or addiction might be the tipping point for others. Beyond the events leading to crisis, the state itself is quite difficult to define. Some may experience lows that look like depression while others may experience the disorganization and high emotional state associated with mania. It is important to listen carefully to the person you are working with to understand what "crisis" means to them and how they experience it.
