What does it mean if an animal is isosthenuric?

Isosthenuria refers to urine concentration in a given animal with a Urine Specific Gravity (USG) range of 1.007-1.013. When an animal is able to sufficiently concentrate its urine through the kidneys (i.e. when the kidneys are working properly), the USG should be higher than 1.013 (if the animal is dehydrated, the USG is expected to be >1.035 because the kidneys are conserving water in the renal tubules and not allowing it to be lost in the urine). Therefore, isosthenuria means that the kidneys of an animal are not functioning properly to concentrate the urine in adequate amounts and the animal is losing water because it is not being appropriately reabsorbed. An animal that is dehydrated with isosthenuric urine is in renal azotemia.

To first solve this equation one must be familiar with the concept of PMDAS. This will determine the order in which the equation must be solved. P = parentheses; everything in parentheses must be solved first. However, because there are unknown variables in the parentheses here, we must move on to the next step. M = multiplication; we will multiply the numbers outside of the parentheses with the numbers inside, carrying over any unknown variables as well as any (+) or (-) signs (this is called the distributive property). The result is: 20x - 8 - 8 = 7x + 30 + 15x Now we must simplify the equation. Group numbers with unknown variables together, and numbers without unknown variables together. I will start by grouping those without unknown variables together first: 20x - 16 = 7x + 30 + 15x Next, group together the numbers attached to unknown variables on either side of the equals sign: 20x - 16 = 22x + 30 Now we must have all of the unknown variables on the same side of the equation. Because we do not want the equation to = 0, we will subtract the number with a variable from both sides: 20x - 16 = 22x + 30 --> -2x - 16 = 30 -22x -22x We must then move the non-variable number on the left side of the equation to the right by adding it to both sides: -2x = 46 To solve for x (the final step), we must divide both sides of the equation by the number that is attached to the variable, and transfer the sign accordingly. x = -23 To check your answer, simply plug the number into the original equation and make sure that both sides of the equals sign are the same value.
