Question:

Why is a thesis important when writing and essay?

Inactive
Paul C.
Answer:

The thesis can be seen as the main "argument" to your paper. Once a person has identified a solid thesis, they have identified a solid idea from which to construct the rest of their essay. Every body paragraph can and should build upon the original idea presented in the thesis.

Question:

Why did the Founding Fathers choose in implement a bicameral system as opposed to a unicameral one?

Paul C.
Answer:

The Founding Father wanted to balance the desires of the people without creating a system where small states would feel ignored and oppressed. This in turn led to the creation of a bicameral system in the U.S. where popular government could be expressed in the House of Representatives and the states could be expressed with equal representation in the Senate. This would not be possible in a unicameral system like with the Articles of Confederation where only the states had representation.

Question:

How did the idea of "King Cotton" contribute to the eventual rise of southern nationalism and the U.S. Civil War in 1861?

Answer:

Cotton, known as "white gold" at the time was an extraordinarily valuable cash crop, thanks in part to the Industrial Revolution as textile factories needed an ample supply of cotton to maintain a high level of production. As most cotton was grown in the American South with slave labor, this vital aspect to the southern economy and slavery itself became tied to southern ideals. The importance of cotton in the global market also convinced southern slave owners that any war would necessarily lead to foreign intervention (by France and Britain) to protect the cotton supply, making southerners more confident that secession was the correct course of action.
