Why learn Spanish?
The point of studying Spanish is not always to become fluent in the language. Many people only take one or two years of a foreign language in secondary school. One hour a day, five days a week, for two entire school years does not provide enough immersion to create fluent individuals. The point of studying another language is to gain a sense of cultural literacy. Language is not separate from culture, and through learning about the language, one also learns about traditions, customs, beliefs, and thought process people who speak the language they are learning, Studying a second language doesn't always equate to language acquisition, but it can lead to a greater understanding of a different people.

What is literacy and why is it important?
At the basic level, literacy is the ability to read and write. But it is not the reading and writing process that is the most important part of literacy. Being literate allows for communication and being a communicative member of society is important, but being an effective communicator is also important. Word use, spelling, and grammar, among other things come in handy when needing to write an email to a future employers, or when chatting with professors and other professionals.
