Questions

Subject: Pre-Calculus

TutorMe
Question:

Unfortunately in Pre-Calculus, we have to deal with a lot of trigonometry and circles. So to get started, I ask, if you have a deep dish pizza with height=a and radius=z, what is the volume of said pizza?

Answer:

Volume of Pizza=Pizza. Proof: Pi*radius^2*height=volume of cylinder. So that's= Pi*z*z*a Hopefully trig doesn't always have to be so annoying.

Subject: Writing

Question:

What do you say to people who are discouraged because they feel they don't write well?

Answer:

Writing can be intimidating and I have definitely felt the same thing throughout my career. However, it is always good to remember that we love to communicate. We talk, text, and even express ourselves through physical motions. Writing is no different. You are not trying to do anything with writing except getting your points across. Therefore, if in doubt, just express yourself as clearly as possible and don't worry about having the perfect word. That can come later.

Subject: Biology

Question:

The species concept has always been controversial. Some biologists even think you can't group organisms into species. However, why might classifying related organisms as species be beneficial to conservation efforts?

Answer:

To save animals, plants, or even entire ecosystems, biologists must work hand-in-hand with non-scientists, including landowners, lawmakers, public interests groups, and even marketing advisers. It is therefore easiest to communicate to the general public the importance of certain organisms vs. others if we can talk in terms of species. Imagine going to the zoo and seeing each enclosure entitled "group of genetically-related organisms". We would still appreciate the animals and plants but wouldn't feel as connected, and we would have a far greater time communicating to others what we observed. When this problem is scaled up to crucial laws aimed at conserving threatened ecosystems, it soon becomes easy to see the problem. Conservation is a battle of compromise, and therefore while the species concept might not work for all organisms, by being able to safely classify the vast majority, we can communicate clearly our goals.
