Brianna R.

In order to show the basic math problem 5 + 3 = 8, you can draw an image of 5 squares in a group, 3 more in a group, and circle all the squares to show a group of 8. You can show a group of 5 tallies and 3 more tallies, then tally all together to show 8. You can show counters in a ten frame. Question:

What are the basic steps to the acquisition of language? What needs to happen for a child to understand the connection between spoken language and written word.

Brianna R.

Children must first be able to speak before they can write and read. One of the most important parts of a child's development and understanding of written language and spoken word, students must be read aloud to. By pointing to words while you read to a child, children start to make a connection between written word and the words you are speaking.

Question:

Which Educational psychologist do you feel you align the most to and why? What about their theories do you feel are the most relevant today? Do you see any flaws in their theories on education?

Brianna R.

I align myself with the beliefs of Vygotsky. I align with Vygotsky because I too believe that children must be exposed to materials when they are ready in order to master a new skill or concept. I believe the theory of Zone of Proximal Development is the most relevant today. The ZPD is relevant in all aspects of child development from a child's ability to ride a bike without training wheels to a child's ability to hear and blend sounds to create words. Vygotsky believed that social interaction was necessary for full cognitive development. In today's society social interaction is not always face to face. This may affect is theory as we see an increase in digital interaction.
