What is the difference between a switch and a router?
Switch operates on Layer 2 of the OSI reference layer (the Data Link layer) while a router operates on Layer 3 of the OSI reference model (the Network layer). Switch allows communication between end points on the same network, whereas a router allows data to traverse more than one network. Switches map data by the MAC address whereas a router will map data based on an IP address.
