What is the importance of maternal and child health (MCH) in public health?
MCH is critical to monitor the health and improve the lives of vulnerable populations. MCH encompasses women and children of all socioeconomic backgrounds, races, and ethnicities. MCH in public health allows access to programs such as WIC and CHIP. MCH in public health directs policy and intervention. By including MCH in public health a more accurate picture of populations can be analyzed. MCH has improved the lives and health of millions of women and children across the United States.
Describe the actions of hemoglobin.
Hemoglobin is a protein carried by red blood cells. Each molecule of hemoglobin can carry 4 oxygen molecules. In the lungs, hemoglobin has a higher affinity for oxygen than myoglobin. Hemoglobin will bind one oxygen molecule and then the shape changes to increase affinity to oxygen for the subsequent binding of the next 3 oxygen molecules. Hemoglobin will then travel throughout the body on red blood cells and exchange oxygen to myoglobin. In other tissues myoglobin has a higher affinity for oxygen than hemoglobin thus, hemoglobin will give up its oxygen molecules to myoglobin.
What is the viral life cycle?
1. The virus infects host cell via binding with a specific receptor. 2. Viral genome material is created in the cell via the use of host cell materials. The virus genome will be translated to proteins via host ribosomes. 3. Progeny release, where the virus will leave the cell either by lysing the cell or by fusing with cell membrane.
