Question:

How can you determine the grammatical gender of a noun with a soft sign in the end?

Inactive
Tatiana B.
Answer:

Nouns with a soft sign in the end can be masculine or feminine. The names of the months (декабрь, июль, etc.), nouns with -арь or -тель in the end are always masculine. The nouns which end on -ость (with the exception of 'гость') and -чь, -жь, -шь, -щь are always feminine. The rest of the ending combinations with a soft sign do not indicate a specific gender. You should look up the gender of such words in a dictionary.
