When should active voice be used? When should passive voice be used?
Active voice describes an action being done BY the subject. For example: I drove the car. Active voice should be used when the writer wants to put emphasis on, or show the importance, of the subject. The subject is more important than the action. Passive voices describes an action being done TO the subject. For example: The car was driven by me. Passive voice should be used when the writer wants the put emphasize on the action (verb). The action is more important than the subject.

Ms. Smith ordered 7 boxes of pencils. Each box contains 12 pencils. Which of the following number sentences could be used to solve this problem? A. 12 +12 +12 +12 +12 +12 +12 +12 +12 +12 +12 +12 B. (12×5) + (12×2) C. (12+5) × (12+2) D. 7+7+7+7+7+7+7 Explain your reasoning.
The correct answer is B. (12×5) + (12×2) There are 7 total boxes of pencils, each containing 12 pencils. This means there are 7 groups of 12. Students will likely look for 7x12, however this is not an option, so they will have to find an equivalent equation. The correct equation breaks 7 into two smaller numbers (5 and 2) that are easier to multiply by 12. When both 5 and 2 are multiplied by 12, then added together, it is equal to 7 x 12. Further Clarification: A and D can immediately be eliminated because A represents 12x12 and D represents 7x7. Neither are equal to 7x12. C is incorrect because 5 and 2 are being multiplied instead of added together. When the equation is solved, it does not equal 7x12

Why did the Colonists want to break away from English (British) rule? How did that lead to the American Revolution?
The Colonists wanted their independence from England because they did not like the unfair laws that the English King required the Colonists to follow. The King forced the Colonists to pay high taxes (examples: Sugar Act, Townshend Act) and keep soldiers in their homes (Quartering Act). The Colonists were unhappy, so they began to rebel. The colonists dumped English Tea into the Boston Harbor (known as the Boston Tea Party), refused to buy goods (boycott goods), and protested. The English were upset by this and the Colonists and English and went to war.
