How are vaccines created, and what does it mean to have a quadrivalent vaccine?
Vaccines are created by inactivating, attenuating, or splitting up viral particles that are then preserved through the use of chemicals. The vaccines are then injected and the immune system produces memory B-cells which will help fight any future exposure to the viral antigen.
When is an Okazaki fragment formed during DNA replication?
An Okazaki fragment is formed when the lagging strand is replicated. This is because DNA polymerase can only function in the 5' -> 3' direction. For the leading strand this is no problem as the replication occurs in the direction towards the replication fork. However, on the lagging strand, replication must travel away from the replication fork causing a need to start and stop frequently.
Describe the function of the kidneys in the body. How does it affect homeostasis? How do the kidneys affect the cardiovascular system?
The kidney is a filtering organ for the blood. The kidney acts to maintain water, acid base, salt, potassium, and other key metabolites within the body and bloodstream. The kidneys also play a major role in maintaining blood pressure through the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone (RAAS) system.
