The 4 steps are as follows: 1. Glycolysis: Happens in the cytoplasm- one glucose molecule is broken down into 2 pyruvate molecules. 2 ATP produced per glucose molecule. 2. Transition reaction: Pyruvate is moved into the mitochondria where it is turned into Acetyl CoA 3.Krebs Cycle: Happens in the mitochondrial matrix. With the presence of Oxygen gas (O2), all the hydrogens (H2) are stripped off the Acetyl CoA, to extract the electrons for making ATP, until there are no hydrogens left. The waste products of this are CO2 and H2O. Produces about 4 ATP but a lot of NADH which is important for the last step. 4. The Electron Transport Chain (ETC): occurs in the christae of the mitochondria. Electrons are carried down the chain with the help of NADH. ATP synthase turns ADP to ATP, which results in 32 ATP per glucose molecule. Total ATP produced = 38.
