Why is it important to cite evidence in order to support your claim?
For opinion writing/persuasive pieces, all readers begin reading with their own opinions and thoughts about the subject matter at hand. Citing evidence is important because you are able to bring credible sources to the reader to help convince them to see your side of the argument. Sources should be referenced if they help to support your opinion. Without these sources, the writer does not provide a strong case for their argument.

Caroline needs to make 102 goodie bags for an event she is hosting. 30 of them are pink, 29 are blue, 12 are yellow, and the rest need to be green. How many need to be green?
We know that Caroline wants to have a total of 102 goodie bags. We also know that she has already made a few bags. We can find the total amount of bags by adding together what she has already made. For example, 30 + 29 + 12 = 71, the total amount she has already made. We now want to know how many goodie bags need to be green. We can do this by subtracting the number of bags that already exist (71) from the total amount she wants to make (102). As a result, 102 - 71 = 31. 31 bags need to be green.

What was George Washington's role in the American Revolutionary War?
George Washington's main role was to lead the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War. He had never led a major army unit before and this initially was shown during the initial parts of the revolution. He was consistently low on supplies, causing a negative outcome of the initial battles of the war. However, Washington's military history is best known for his work in the Battle of Trenton, where he crossed the Delaware River on Christmas Day to lead a surprise attack on German hessians. As the hessians were unprepared, Washington won the battle with no American casualties. As a result, the Continental Army morale boosted and led to the eventual victory of the Revolutionary War.
