Imagine you are a teacher in a high school, and you are interested in teaching some Restoration and eighteenth-century plays to your students. Your school board, however, is a bit skeptical. Briefly write to the board explaining why (despite the cultural and language difficulty) you might teach plays from these eras to high school students.
In order to develop into a successful individual one must be culturally enriched through their academic endeavors as well as through different forms of cultural enlightenment by way of the arts. From theater to music, to the all-encompassing literature, the arts are essential in a child’s education as they put forth a challenge to the student’s usual way of thinking and understanding of basic concepts. The power of knowledge is invaluable, and it is important to take hold of every teachable moment that presents itself across generations and through time, especially in literature. The late seventeenth century and the early eighteenth century represented a period of cultural rebirth in which new ideals and values were introduced in the form of written Restoration drama. Reading the works from these time periods will equip students with life lessons on the importance of socio-economic status, appearance versus reality, and being true to your own identity all the while enhancing, with eloquence, their handle of the English language as it is presented to them in a new light.
