The equation 2x=20 is a one step equation. In order to solve for the value of x, we must isolate the variable on one side of the equal sign. In order to do this, we must use opposite operations. Right now the operation on the x variable is multiplication (the x is being multiplied by 2). The opposite of multiplication is division. Therefore, we must dived 2x by 2. 2x/2 is simply x. When manipulating equations, we must do the same to each side of the equal sign- since we divided the left side by 2, we must also divide the right side by 2. 20/2=10. Once dividing both sides by 2, we are left with x=10. We can check our solution by substituting our answer back into the original equation. 2(10)=20. This can be simplified to 20=20 so we know we have the right answer.

In order to find the total amount of money Billy received, we must add the two values together. 15+20=35. Billy received a total of $35 from his grandparents for his birthday.
Write the equation of a line that is parallel to the line: y=1/2x + 3.
We know that parallel lines have the same slope and so we must first identify the slop of the given line. Slope intercept formula is y=mx+b where m is slope and b is the y-intercept. With that information, we are able to determine that the slope of our answer must be 1/2 because that is the slope in the give line. A line that is parallel to the given line can have any y-intercept (b)- so we will choose 4. Therefore the equation of a line parallel to the give line is y=1/2x + 4.
