We replace y in the other equation, and instead of $$x^{2} - y = 14 $$ we can write it as $$x^{2} -(6x+2) = 14 $$. We then expand the brackets and move 14 to the left side to equate the equation to 0: $$x^{2} -(6x+2) = 14 $$ -> $$x^{2} -6x-2 = 14 $$ -> $$x^{2} -6x-2 -14 = 0 $$ -> $$x^{2} -6x-16 = 0 $$ If these two sets of brackets equal 0, then that means that one of the two brackets must equal 0. Therefore, x has two possible values, $$x =8$$ and $$x=-2$$.
