Conjugate the verbs in parentheses in the appropriate form in the following paragraph. Conjugue las formas correctas de los verbos en parentesis del párrafo siguiente En el futuro, quiero que nadie (tener)1.___________hambre. Es triste que muchos niños (sufrir) 2.__________. Me da pena que (haber) 3. _________ pobreza en este mundo. Quiero que (ayudar) 4. __________ a la gente.
This is an excercise with the present subjunctive. 1. tenga. En el futuro, quiero que nadie tenga hambre. There are two clues in this sentence that tell us whether to use subjunctive. First, Quiero is a verb of influence, that means to wish or want. Second, there are two different subjects in this sentence: (yo, from quiero) and (nadie). Whenever we see quiero + que + change in subject, that signals us to use subjunctive. Go to the yo form of the verb, drop the o, and flip the final vowel. tener- tengo- tenga. 2. sufran. Es triste que always signals the subjunctive because it is an expression of emotion. We form this verb by going to the yo form, dropping the o, flipping the vowel, and conjugating it with the subject. Who is suffering? muchos niños. Since muchos niños is plural, our verb has to be in plural form, so we add [an]. sufrir- sufro- sufra- sufran. 3. haya. Me da pena que haya pobreza... Me da pena que is another emotional expression that always signals that the verb used after it will be subjunctive. Haber is an irregular verb. The present subjunctive form is haya. 4. ayudar. Quiero que ayudar a la gente. The verb ayudar stays in infinitive. Even though we see quiero que, we have to look at the subject. In this sentence. There is only one subject (yo). The speakers says that HE or SHE wants to do help- there is no change in subject. So, we keep the verb in the infinitive form. If HE or SHE wanted SOMEONE ELSE to do something, then we would use subjunctive.

Susan is going to drive to her friend's house. The total distance she has to drive is 140 miles. For the first part of the trip, there is not much traffic so she can go 65 miles per hour. During the second part of the trip, she can only go 40 miles per hour due to traffic. T represents how long in hours she drives at 65 miles per hour and X represents how long in hours she drives at 40 miles per hour. What does the term 40X represent?
Here to set up an equation for this problem, let's look at what we are given. The total distance is 140 miles. Susan drives 65 miles per hour for T hours and 40 miles per hour for X hours. So, 140 miles = 65miles/hour (T hours) + 40 miles/hour (X hours). What does the term 40X represent? The term 40X is 40 miles per hour times X hours. Since hours are on the bottom of the fraction, we can cancel out this unit by multiplying it by X hours. For example, if we substituted X for 2 hours, we could say: If I go 40 miles in 1 hour, how many do I go in 2 hours? 40 m/h x 2 hr = 80 miles. So, 40X represents the total distance Susan travels when her speed is 40 miles per hour.
