What are the major differences in digestion and absorption of the following sugars- glucose, fructose, and sucrose?
Glucose and fructose are two of the major monosaccharides, or simple sugars, in the body. They are absorbed directly into the bloodstream from the small intestine. When glucose enters the cells, it is either used to create energy or stored in the body as glycogen for later use. Fructose raises blood sugar levels more gradually. It must be converted into glucose before it can be used by the body for energy. Sucrose is a disaccharide, or a complex sugar. Digestion of sucrose starts in the mouth. It will be broken down into the simple sugars, fructose and glucose. The presence of glucose will increase the absorption of fructose, and it also stimulates the release of the hormone, insulin. Consuming these two sugars together is more harmful to the body than eating them separately. Sucrose is also known as table sugar. This is why we are encouraged to lower our daily consumption of added sugar.
When do I use a semicolon in a sentence vs. a comma?
Use a semicolon when you have two independent clauses connected without a conjunction such as 'and,' 'or', 'for,' 'but,' or 'nor.' Commas are placed between two independent clauses when one of these conjunctions are present. Examples: Use a semicolon: I cleaned the counters; she mopped the floor. Use a comma: I cleaned the counters, and she mopped the floor.
