Why do we experience colder temperatures during the winter?
Cold temperatures in the winter are due to the tilt of Earth's axis. During the winter, the sun's rays do not reach us as directly. This is due to the angle that they are reaching the Earth. The rays are less concentrated, which means the energy that they deliver is less intense. Therefore, the temperatures are colder in the winter.
Explain how a mutation in a gene causes a protein to not be able to perform its normal function.
Mutations in a gene cause the shape of a protein to change. This is because the sequence of nucleotides in a gene determine the order of amino acids in a protein, which determines the shape of the protein. Proteins operate based on their shape, so if they can't interact correctly with parts of the cell, they can't perform functions.
Mammals operate on sleep cycles called circadian rhythms. These rhythms determine when organisms feel the need to sleep, and when they feel alert. Circadian rhythms are dependent on the light/dark cycle caused by the oscillation of daylight and darkness at night. Interpret the graph below to answer the question: what happens to the rhythm when this mouse is placed in a box that removes the light/dark cycle that governs its rhythm?
When the light/dark cycle is removed, the mouse's 12 hour sleep cycle shifts by about an hour every week as time goes on.
