Question:

Use trig identities to prove tanxsinx + cosx = secx

June L.

Begin with the left side: tanxsinx + cosx = sinx/cosx * sinx + cosx = sin^2x/cosx + cosx = sin^2x/cosx + cos^2x/cosx = (sin^2x + cos^2x)/cosx = 1/cosx

Question:

How does a painkiller work to stop the pain? What is the difference between aspirin-type painkillers and narcotic-type painkillers?

Pain is the transmission of a specific signal to the brain via the spinal cord. Pain relief medication works to block these signals from reaching the brain, thus allow us to not perceive the pain. Aspirin and similar pain killers block prostaglandins, molecules produced in our body in response to pain and swelling. Once prostaglandins from the source of the pain are blocked, it stops us from feeling pain and also reduces swelling. Narcotics, often addictive, block pain messages in the spinal cord as the pain signal goes up to the brain. They are used for much more severe types of pain.
