Question:

Take a look at the following writing sample a student has written about their experience trying something new. Then, make at least three changes that you think would strengthen the piece of writing (think: transition words, complex sentences, interesting adjectives, etc). I learned how to skateboard. My friend taught me how. It was hard to balance. I liked how the wind felt in my face. Skating fast was scary at first. Then I got more confident and it was not so scary. My skateboard is blue. The wheels are orange. I would like to skateboard again.

Answer:

Yesterday afternoon, my friend taught me how to skateboard. My skateboard is a soft shade of blue that reminds me of the sky on a clear summer day. The wheels are a vibrant neon orange. It was difficult to balance, but I liked how the cool wind felt as it blew my hair and touched my face. While skating fast was terrifying at first, I gained more confidence and realized there was nothing to be afraid of. I can't wait to skateboard again-- maybe even today!
