Question:

¿Como aprendiste español? ¿Lo hablaste mientras estabas creciendo?

Taylor C.
Answer:

No, no hablaba español cuando era joven. De hecho, solo comencé a aprender español hace dos años. Sin embargo, viví en España en un viaje de aprendizaje al extranjero durante seis meses, y todavía estoy estudiando español en mi universidad. Hablo mejor de lo que escribo, a menos que tenga tiempo de buscar vocabulario, ¡jajaja!

Question:

Why do some English teachers force students to avoid "to be" verbs (am, are, is, was, etc.) in their essays?

Answer:

"To be" verbs have their place in writing, and many academic and professional essays could not exist without them. They serve the basic function of describing that something exists, which comes up quite a lot in the English language. As young writers, though, students must avoid leaning on the crutch of simple verbs. By eliminating building blocks, these teachers hope to see students restructure their sentences and spice up their vocabulary. Learning to describe how a thing exists, and when and where and why, is an important step towards better writing, and will serve students well, even if it frustrates them in the present.

Question:

What is segmentation and why is it important in marketing?

Answer:

A scatter-shot approach where brands try to market to the entire populous, otherwise called mass marketing, is not longer possible for several reasons. The message will get muddled in trying to appeal to too many different interests, and the rapid advancement of technology means that different mediums of communication simply will not reach everyone. By dividing the potential audiences for a product or service into homogeneous sub-groups - that is, people who are alike in some key aspect - brands are able to market directly to their interests. This is called segmentation, and it allows clear advertising to those who would be most interested.
