Harriet Tubman was a slave who escaped her master's plantation in Maryland, traveling all the way to Philadelphia, to freedom. Once there, she returned to free other slaves multiple times. Once the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was passed Tubman had to extend her rescue journey all the way to Canada.
