About Kayla
My name is Kayla Johnson and I'm a senior English-Secondary Education major at LSU with a minor in Political Science. I've worked with students for the past 3 years in various settings: one on one tutoring, small group facilitation, and whole class instruction. I'm bilingual, fluent in English and Brazilian Portuguese, and come from a multicultural background. I'm passionate about community education and I believe in connecting academic material to the life we live outside of the classroom.
Teaching Experience
I'm current working as a student teacher at McKinley High School in the East Baton Rouge Parish School District. I teach English I and English IV. I've also tutored at the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired in 8th grade ELA.

Work Experience
Respire Haiti
2015 - 2015
I worked for 3 months as an Intern with the non profit organization Respire Haiti. The organization operates a K-9th grade school and community clinic in the rural community of Gressier, Haiti. As an intern, I oversaw all volunteer workers, Haitian and American, and facilitated communication between the volunteers and the full time staff. During my stay I acquire a working knowledge of Haitian Creole.
Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired
2013 - 2015
I worked as an after school tutor for the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired in Baton Rouge, LA. As a tutor, I worked with small tutoring groups of 5-12 students for 1.5 hours 2-3 times a week. Though I worked primarily with middle and high school students, I spent 4 months with an elementary tutoring group as well. My background is in English and Political Science, so I worked with students one-on-one with their reading and writing skills.
