Question:

At the beginning of the year, John has 100 dollars in his savings account. Each month he puts an additional 20 dollars into the account. His friend Lucy starts with \$200 dollars in her savings account and adds 10 dollars to it each month. When will Lucy and John have the same amount of money in their savings accounts?

Stefan T.

John's Account: \$\$ y = 20x+100\$\$ Lucy's Account: \$\$y=10x+200\$\$ The accounts will be equal when \$\$10x+200=20x+100\$\$ To solve, first subtract 100 from the both sides \$\$10x+100=20x\$\$ Then subtract 10x from both sides so we are left with this: \$\$100=10x\$\$ \$\$x=10\$\$ After 10 months Lucy and John Will have the same amount of money in their savings accounts.
