Question:

What qualifies as a good thesis statement, and where should it be in my essay?

Inactive
Lauren K.
Answer:

A solid thesis statement is typically one to two sentences and it is found in the end of your introductory paragraph. It should answer the question or prompt clearly, state your position on the question or topic, and provide a glimpse as to what the rest of the essay will be about. Make sure your thesis statement makes a claim and provides a reason why your claim is correct.

Question:

What were some of the effects, both positive and negative, of the Industrial Revolution in America?

Answer:

The Industrial Revolution transformed America from a largely rural country into an urbanized and industrialized one; however, the lack of regulations kept it from being an entirely positive time in history. For instance, the lack of labor laws meant young children were forced into horrible working conditions without any breaks. Children were also used because they were less likely to organize, and they could reach into places that adults couldn't, like mines. Many children died working in these unsafe conditions, which prompted new labor laws and child labor laws to be enacted. In addition, there was no limit on the amount of hours a day anyone, children or adults, could work until the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution also pushed creativity as many new business techniques and scientific inventions, such as the steam engine, were pioneered during this time. In general, the Industrial Revolution was a turning point in American history as everybody was impacted by it at some level. There was major population growth and the average person's income increased. Also, the standard of living for the average American increased due to innovations.

Question:

When is it appropriate to use a semicolon? What is an example of a sentence with a semicolon used correctly?

Answer:

A semicolon joins two independent clauses without using a conjunction such as "and". A semicolon is used when the two clauses, or parts, are related. A semicolon can also be used when listing items or examples. An example is: I saw a magnificent lizard; it was eating a mouse."
