Question:

What is the difference between a natural minor and a harmonic minor scale?

Answer:

Both of these scales have lowered 3rd & 6th steps. The natural minor also lowers the 7th step, while the harmonic minor raises the 7th step up to where it would be in a major scale. This raised 7th gives a harmonic minor scale a distinct "middle east" sound (think of the music from "Aladdin.")

Question:

What is essential for creating a good brass emboucure?

Answer:

The corners of your mouth should be firm, with the center of the lips relaxed. Think of saying the letter "M" to accomplish this. Keep the lips away from the teeth, with the throat open and relaxed. To play, buzz the lips while blowing air out and keeping this embouchure intact. The faster the air, or buzz, the higher the pitch. The slower, the lower the pitch.

Question:

What are ways in which a comfortable learning environment can be established that promotes collaboration and self-directed learning?

Answer:

Students should be given every opportunity to create learning opportunities through self-motivated activities. This can be accomplished by establishing guidelines for them to follow, but letting them determine the subject or direction of a project. Allowing them opportunities to teach others about what they're learning is also a great way to help them master a particular concept. Also, being open to adapt the direction of a lesson, based on student needs and/or responses is essential.
