Question:

The largest pyramid, built for the Pharaoh Khufu around 2530 B.C. and intended in lasting an eternity, was until fairly recently the largest building on the planet. To raise it, laborers moved six-and-a-half million tons of stone—some in blocks as large as nine tons—into position using nothing but wood and rope. A. NO CHANGE B. on lasting C. for lasting D. to last

Answer:

The passage is written in past tense. The pyramid was built a long time ago. So you do not want a word that has -ing as a suffix because it will make it present tense. The only option that does not have -ing is option D. Option D is correct because the rest of the option changes the tense of the passage.

Question:

What are some common personal statement mistakes that I should avoid?

Answer:

Of course, everyone's first thought would be to make sure that your personal statement is grammatically correct with no spelling errors. However, you should focus on the content. Many students make the mistake of trying to sound impressive by throwing in big words, and it is very obvious. Instead, find a story that you want to share that truly expresses who you are and how you grew as a person. Another common mistake that I see when helping students with their personal statement is that they want to focus on the aspect of pity. Many students want to show the college admission staff right off the bat about their tough circumstances. You should absolutely do so in your personal statement, but many students forget to explain how they grew from those experiences. Colleges want to see growth, not a sob story.

Question:

Why is the sentence, "That drawing is a little unique compared to the others." is grammatically incorrect?

Answer:

When we call something "unique", we mean that it is different. When we say the word "unique", we want to say that it is special. However, the definition of "unique" means that it is one of a kind. That means that when something is "unique" there is nothing else like it. Therefore, something can NOT be a little bit unique. If it is a little bit unique, then it is not unique at all! You can NOT have something that is "a little bit one of a kind". It has to be absolute. These words are called absolute adjectives, were you can not have a little bit of the word, you must have it all!
